The Maximum Student-to-Teacher Ratio in these classes is 20 to 1.
Our School Day is Monday through Thursday from 8:30am to 3:00pm, and Friday from 8:30am to 2:00pm.
The goal of Zion Lutheran School is to help students develop a relationship with Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. We realize that the adolescent child requires unique attention and care. In response to God’s plan, and by the direction of the Holy Spirit, we pledge to respond to the learning, behavioral, social, and spiritual needs in such ways that provide opportunities for success and growth for these young servants in God’s world.
Religion: In order for the children to grow as Christians and know God’s desire for their lives, daily devotions, prayer needs, Bible study, memory work, and the study of Luther’s Small Catechism provide spiritual focus through materials from Concordia Publishing House.
Chapel: All the children gather each week for a worship service that includes prayer, music, Christian
mission opportunities, and age appropriate talks. Parents are welcome to join us each week for this special time.
Language Arts & Literature: The language arts curriculum is designed to provide learning and practice in English language skills and use. Subsequent to review by the teacher, students are held accountable for self-corrections and editing skills of writing assignments.
Literature is designed to integrate across the grade level curriculum. Criteria considered in literature selections include: use of English skills, historical or scientific impact, human conflict, and faith-based resolutions or values.
Mathematics: In 2018, we’re starting McGraw-Hill’s ALEKS math program, which is a web-based curriculum allowing students to complete learning objectives at their own pace.
Science: Through the Holt Life Science Curriculum and Answers in Genesis, the 7th grade students learn of the diversity of God’s creation through observation, lab skills, and application of scientific principles. In 8th grade, Holt Physical Science provides a base for understanding various aspects of our physical world.
History/Geography: To fully appreciate the world that God created, discussions and projects include current events, geography and other cultures. Seventh grade students study Washington State History and World Civilizations, and eighth grade students study U.S. History and the United States Constitution.
Physical Education: Physical Education is a class designed to provide aerobic exercise, appreciation for physical fitness, and learned skills in individual and team athletics. Students are required to dress in designated PE attire twice a week for this class.
Technology: Junior High students visit the computer lab to improve word processing skills, perform research, and to explore extended math challenges via Internet lessons, spread sheets, or other problem solving tasks. Classroom computers may be used for projects and yearbook layout and page design. Students have access to school-owned iPads on a regular basis. SMART Boards are used in all middle school classrooms.
Electives may include:
Speech/Drama: Junior High Students participate in drama activities and stagecraft training. They also study public speaking and speech writing and will also prepare and deliver different types of speeches during the year.
Choir: The choir program endeavors to educate and engage students in music experiences that will prepare them for subsequent choral music classes in their high schools. We offer a choir setting with emphasis on two and three-part music with performances throughout the school year.
Art: The students experience an array of art through drawing, printing and interpretive expression.
Library: Time is allowed each week for the students to use the library for resource purposes and
individual reading. Books are checked out of the library for personal enjoyment.
Yearbook: Yearbook class is offered by student application and selected by the teaching staff. This class requires the presumed skills of the average junior high English students. Over the course of the year, the students follow a curriculum of planning, designing, and creating the school yearbook.
Leadership: Students apply Christian servanthood to plan and create activities that promote both school and community activities.
Field Trips: Junior high students learn to appreciate our community through trips to the Museum of Flight, Padilla Bay and Ride The Ducks in downtown Seattle.
Special Activities: Seventh and eighth grade students experience fun and fellowship on a retreat to Camp Lutherwood in September. During this time, they also enjoy swimming, fishing, canoeing, hiking, worship, and learning how to develop healthy relationships. Eighth grade students celebrate graduation and enjoy an end-of–the year trip to Lake Chelan State Park.
Extra-Curricular Activities: In order to develop all the talents of each child, a wide variety of extra curricular activities are offered. These include: soccer, volleyball, basketball, cross-country, track, cheer, robotics, chess and math competitions, drama club, Chapel club, Knowledge Bowl, and other fine art activities.
Spring Musical: Students participate in a drama production involving song and dance. Some of the recent productions include The Lion King (2016), Into the Woods (2017) and The Wizard of Oz (2018).
LE.S.T.: The Lutheran Elementary Schools Tournament (L.E.S.T.) is a ministry of Concordia University, Portland in partnership with elementary schools of the Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod. The L.E.S.T. is based on the value of Christian education that emphasizes the love and praise of God, thankful use of talents and service to others. The primary goal of L.E.S.T. is to provide an organized structure to promote fun, skill development, fair play and fellowship among Lutheran elementary school youth through academic, fine arts and recreational activities. Students may be involved in one or more activities. These include: athletics, drill, cheer, spelling bee, knowledge bowl, chess club, math competition, piano and essay competition.
Piano Lessons: Lessons are available throughout the school day for an additional charge.
